1. Fire gave us power.
The use of fire was a major breakthrough in human history. It not only provided light and warmth but also changed our diet and lifestyle.
Cooking food: By using fire to cook food, humans could eat a wider variety of foods, reduce harmful pathogens and parasites in food, increase nutritional value, and promote brain development.
Protection and tool-making: Fire could be used to ward off wild animals, providing safety for humans. It could also be used to forge tools and weapons, enhancing our survival and hunting capabilities.
2. Gossip helped us cooperate.
Humans are social animals, and communication and cooperation are key to survival and development. Gossip, or informal communication about others, helps us build and maintain social relationships.
Trust and cooperation: Through gossip, people can share information and learn who is a trustworthy partner and who might be dangerous or unreliable, thereby promoting closer social cooperation.
Social norms: Gossip also helps establish and reinforce social norms and morals by spreading evaluations of behavior, thus regulating individual actions and maintaining social order.
3. Agriculture made us hungry for more.
The Agricultural Revolution changed human survival methods from nomadic hunting and gathering to settled farming, bringing huge social and economic transformations.
Land and resources: Agriculture required fixed land and resources, leading to human desire and competition for land, promoting the formation of private property and social hierarchies.
Population growth: Agriculture provided a stable food supply, supporting population growth, but also brought a demand for more land and resources, driving humans to constantly clear new land and pursue more wealth and power.
4. Mythology maintained law and order.
Myths and religious stories provided ways to explain the world and set behavioral norms, helping to establish and maintain social order.
Religious laws: Many ancient societies used myths and religious stories to establish laws and behavioral norms. For example, the Ten Commandments in the Bible provided moral and legal guidance for Jews and Christians.
Authority legitimacy: Rulers often used myths to legitimize their authority. For instance, the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt were considered incarnations of gods, thereby maintaining their ruling power and social order.
5. Money gave us something we could really trust.
Money, as a universally accepted medium of exchange, greatly facilitated trade and economic development.
Value exchange: Money provided a standardized measure of value, making the exchange of different goods and services more convenient and reliable, promoting the development of market economies.
Social trust: People’s trust in money does not depend on the trust in individual transaction partners but on the trust in the entire economic system. This trust makes complex economic activities possible.
6. Science made us deadly.
Scientific and technological advances have brought great benefits but also unprecedented destructive power.
Weapon technology: Scientific research has driven the development of weapon technology, such as gunpowder and nuclear weapons, greatly increasing the destructive power of wars and raising the risk of human self-destruction.
Biotechnology: Modern biotechnology and genetic engineering also bring potential deadly risks, such as biological weapons and the uncertainties and risks posed by genetic modification.
